Text of Petition:
Under the direction of the Republican Party, 1.1 million voters were removed from registration rolls just prior to the 2016 elections through the Interstate Crosscheck System. The overwhelming majority of these voters that were people of color in key battleground states.
As previously reported by the Strategic Institute of Intersectional Policy (SIIP):
“Without voter purging in key states, Donald Trump likely would not have won the 2016 presidential election. In Arizona, Trump probably would not have been able to secure the state’s 11 electoral votes without purging almost 271,000 voters. The difference between candidates in this state is approximately 85,000. In Michigan, the difference between candidates vying for the state’s 16 electoral votes was well under 11,000 — almost 450,000 voters had been purged. And in North Carolina, Trump won 15 electoral votes by approximately 177,000 votes. Close to 600,000 votes had to be purged from the system to accomplish this.”
Currently, there are 27 states still participating in the Interstate Crosscheck System and the Republican party Is positioning itself to take this purging program nationwide. SIIP believes that it is time to confront voter suppression and ensure that every eligible voter is able to cast a vote in the 2018 mid-term elections.
In this spirit, we are formally asking the Democratic Party to:
1. Direct Secretaries of State to immediately and voluntarily withdraw from the Interstate Crosscheck System.
2. Deploy legal teams and resources to fight Crosscheck in the lower federal courts under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment.
If these actions are taken immediately by the Democratic Party, over 1 million voters can be re-enfranchised before the next mid-term election cycle, and millions more can be saved from the next wave of Republican purges.
Add your name to this petition to let the Democrats know you want to end voter purging by 2018.
